  1. Avast update

  5. In Jul2000 version the differencial update through the internet (iAVS)
  6. have been updated. Together with this change, you can add the
  7. differencial update of virus database into the mechanism of automatic
  8. update (using the tmd files).
  9.  
  10. this text describes the changes, which taked place in the automatic 
  11. update mechanisms. It describes only the automatic update, and that means that 
  12. automatic update is not affilated with iAVS in any way.
  13.  
  14. This document  is especially for network administrators. If you are a
  15. normal user with internet connection, you will update using the iAVS
  16. system, or through CD update.
  17.  
  18. Philosophy of VPS files update
  19. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
  20.  
  21. Version of VPS file in Avast32 program is identified using the fileversion
  22. (number showing file version in dfile properties) of Avast32.vps file. Version
  23. number has this format: 3.7.70.XXYY. If YY=00, it is the main VPS. Main VPS is
  24. created once a month, and if changes have been performed the YY number will be 
  25. higher by one then the previous version. Every main VPS has the XX number higher
  26. by one than the VPS from the previous month. Examples:
  27. 3.7.70.4000
  28. 3.7.70.4001
  29. 3.7.70.4002

  31. After the creation of the new main VPS, ALWIL Software creates files
  32. (example is for VPS 3.7.70.4000 version):
  33. Avast32.vps -- Last VPS file used by Avast.
  34. vps30.tmd,vps30.tm -- files for automatic VPS update for Jun2000 version and older.
  35. vps31.vpu,vps31.tm -- files for automatic VPS update for Jun2000 version and newer. 
  36. Whole VPS.
  37. vps32.vpu,vps32.tm -- files for automatic VPS update for Jun2000 version and newer,
  38. using the differencial file for the previous main VPS.
  39. 4000.vpu -- file for iAVS
  40. 4000_3900.vpu -- file for iAVS

  42. While creating the VPS 3.7.70.4002 version ALWIL Software creates these files:
  43. Avast32.vps -- last VPS file for direct use with Avast.
  44. vps30.tmd,vps30.tm -- files for automatic update of the VPS for the Jun2000
  45. version and older.

  47. vps32.vpu,vps32.tm -- files for automatic VPS update for Jul2000 and newer.
  48. differencial files according to previous main VPS (3.7.70.4000).
  49. 4002_4000.vpu -- iAVS file
  50.  
  51. Avast32 leaves the last copy of main VPS in Avast32.vpo file.

  53. Filesize: Files Avast32.vps and vps30.tmd have size approximately 1.3MB.
  54. File vps31.vpu and xx00.vpu has about 600 KB. Differencial files vps32.vpu
  55. and XXYY_XXYY.vpu have tens of kB

  58. Automatic Update

  62. In this text is described just part of the updeate of the files 
  63. (file/avs/minisp). Data update (security/licence) is without changes
  64. and there are no referneces of it in text below.
  65.  
  66. Till now (up to Jun2000 version, included), the automatic update allowed 
  67. to set the addresses and the names of the files for the file, avs and 
  68. minisp alone. From Jul2000 version, the update files for file,avs and 
  69. minisp are taken from one directory -- it is the directory, which was used
  70. by the previous versions for file update (FileUpdate, sp32.tmd). Filenames
  71. cannot be changed.
  72. For program update the sp32.tmd/sp32.tm file is used, for virus database
  73. update (AVS) the vps31.vpu/vps31.tm and vps32.vpu/vps32.tm files are used.
  74. For minisp update it is minisp.tmd/minisp.tm file. It is because of 
  75. preparation for situation, when in one direcotry will be some number of 
  76. files which will be installed.

  78. What should administrator do

  81. We suggest these settings:
  82.  
  83. Addresses for:
  84. file update (sp32.tmd):  file://f:\tmd\files\sp32.tmd
  85. AVS update (vps30.tmd):     file://f:\tmd\avs\vps30.tmd
  86. minisp update (minisp.tmd): file://f:\tmd\mini\minisp.tmd

  88. After the release of new version, administrator will download these files:
  89. sp32.tmd,       sp32.tm   -- program update
  90. vps30.tmd,      vps30.tm  -- whole VPS for old versions
  91. vps31.vpu,      vps31.tm  -- whole VPS for new versions
  92. vps32.vpu,      vps32.tm  -- difference for new versions
  93.  
  94. Vps30.* files places into the f:\tmd\avs\ directory. Other files into 
  95. f:\tmd\files\ directory. If the new vps file is released during the month,
  96. administrator will download vps30.tmd, vps30.tm and vps32.vpu, vps30.tm files.
  97. Files vps30.tmd,vps30.tm will be placed into the f:\tmd\avs\ directory,
  98. files vps32.vpu,vps32.tm into the vps32.vpu,vps32.tm directory.

  100. How the update is proceeding (situations):
  101. Administrator downloaded: vps30.tmd, vps30.tm, vps31.vpu, vps31.tm, 
  102. vps32.vpu, vps32.tm for new VPS version 3.7.70.4300 and places them
  103. in the specified directories.

  105. Computer with Avast version Jun2000 or older:
  106. Will update VPS using the vps30.tmd, vps30.tm files.
  107.  
  108. Computer with Avast version Jul2000 or newer with VPS file with version 
  109. different then 3.3.70.4200:
  110. Update will be done by files vps31.vpu, vps31.tm.

  112. Computer with Avast version Jul2000 or newer with VPS file version 3.7.70.4200:
  113. Will be updated by vps32.vpu, vps32.tm files.
  114.  
  115. Administrator downloade files: vps30.tmd, vps30.tm, vps32.vpu, vps32.tm for new
  116. VPS version 3.7.70.4301 and saved into the specific directories.
  117.  
  118. Computer with Avast version Jun2000 or older:
  119. Will update VPS by using vps30.tmd, vps30.tm files.
  120.  
  121. Computer with Avast version Jul2000 or newer with VPS file with version
  122. different then 3.7.70.4300:
  123. Will start the update with vps31.vpu, vps31.tm files on version 3.7.70.4300
  124. and then using the vps32.vpu, vps32.tm on version 3.7.70.4301.

  126. Computer with Avast version Jul2000 or newer with VPS file version  3.7.70.4300:
  127. Will update using the vps32.vpu, vps32.tm files.

  129. Program Update

  132. No changes. It is done by files sp32.tmd and sp32.tm.

  134. Minisp update

  137. No misisp for versions older then Jul2000 will not be released. If some minisp
  138. will be created for versions Jul2000 or newer, it will be updated from the
  139. update files directory ( the same directory, where sp32.tmd is copied)

  141. iAVS configuration files update

  144. If you use automatic update, you will probably want to disable the iAVS for
  145. users. This can be done by changing the syncer.ini and servers.def files.
  146. Edit sincer.ini, and into the [syncer] section:
  147. HideInAvast=1
  148. This will hide the button for automatic update in Avast. Next, change the
  149. file servers.def like this:
  150. [servers]
  151. count=0
  152. for both these files create time stamp (.tm file) like this:
  153. tmcr.exe syncer.ini
  154. tmcr.exe servers.def
  155. Files and time stamps save into the directory for file update.
